Old New York Magazine Archive

Cover image on the first issue of New York Magazine.

A few months ago I had the pleasure of going into the library here at New York Magazine to do some research on the how our Intelligencer logo has changed over the years. It’s kind of like being a kid in a candy store going through the library. It has every issue from 1968 till the present–all organized and sitting among sometimes multiple copies of each issue.

So what do you do if you don’t work here and can’t access the fun room? On nymag.com, we have cover art for every issue and we also sell back issues of the magazine. But that will only get you as far back 2002 for the cover art and the old issues don’t have every single issue. Enter Google. They’ve got every issue cataloged going back to the first issue: with a stick and a ball on the cover, that gorgeous original logo designed by Milton Glaser, which sold for a quaint 40 cents.

These are the times I love moving archives online.
